This approach allows  the youngest history students to grasp onto concrete places, events, and people. The biggest philosophical flaw in the Greek method—the assumption that history can be explained entirely by the actions of kings, queens, and military leaders—can be partly circumvented by supplementing with some of the many elementary-level history resources that explore the daily lives of ordinary boys and girls, farmers and workers, peasants and miners. By sixth or seventh grade, a student should have a basic grasp of who, where, and when.

I cannot for the life of me understand how or why people claim to have absolute faith in any of the systems, the institutions, or the procedures of mankind. The human race has absolutely NEVER in its history played fairly, squarely, or honestly. Lies, deceit, treachery for personal gain, personal advancement, or national conquest have been the modus opperandi since time was first kept track of. I suppose that fooling the masses with shiny objects, pretty colored lights, and happy, smiling faces has finally become the norm rather than the exception. Voting has always involved fraud, always. The only issue to be argued is whether or not there is enough of it during any particular election to actually affect the results.

Still, understanding the complexities, this book will be skeptical of governments and their attempts, through politics and culture, to ensnare ordinary people in a giant web of nationhood pretending to a common interest. I will try not to overlook the cruelties that victims inflict on one another as they are jammed together in the boxcars of the system. I don't want to romanticize them. But I do remember (in rough paraphrase) a statement I once read: "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you don't listen to it, you will never know what justice is."
